The staggering rise in online shopping is often looked at as very positive for consumers – more choice, better prices and wayyyyyyyy more convenience. And don’t get us wrong, we’re all for it (of course, it is our business after all). However, we do need to sit back and look at the whole process and see the other ways it is affecting us, and the planet.
We're not going to go into the specifics around this, as it could well take up the rest of the year, but there are plenty of good resources on the internet if you want to get in to it further (https://www.wwf.org.au/news/blogs/plastic-waste-and-climate-change-whats-the-connection#gs.r0hnzy a good start). But we will say that (unsurprisingly) we agree with 97% of scientists in the world who say we need to take action on climate change (https://skepticalscience.com/global-warming-scientific-consensus-advanced.htm).
At Junkmail, we’re purely an online business – and this means that we are leaving a footprint. But that doesn't mean there aren't things we can do about it. So continue to follow us on our Impact page https://www.junkmail.com.au/pages/our-mission where we'll keep updating you with what we're doing.
As our early customers would know, we sent the Junkmail undies in vacuum sealed bags. This was initially done to ensure the cheapest possible postage, which meant that we could sell our premium quality men’s undies at a price that you wouldn’t believe.
It also made it hard to change. Will our customers be ok with a significant jump up in price for the sustainable solution? While a majority would answer yes (hopefully), we found the perfect solution to this conundrum. After months and months of investigation, and trialling a huge amount of options, we found a solution that will allow us to keep our undies ridiculously cheap and a packaging solution that is sustainable.
That’s a great question, and one that could be explained in a few minutes, or over a few weeks. We’ll take the former option.
First of all, the mailer is made from recycled material (approximately 75% post consumer recycled pulp). It is also fully recyclable. So when you receive the undies, please ensure you put the packaging into your recycling stream.
This paper mailer is particularly special though because not only does it have these wonderful qualities, it helps the planet through a number of other ways:
We’re committed to full transparency around the sustainability qualities of each material or product we produce, and we continue to look at other areas in the business we can improve.
